Buckhannon Upshur Retail Merchants Association

BURMA Volunteer Opportunities

Businesses or individuals volunteering at BURMA events can be reassured they will gain from their donation because of the visibility they will receive and the positive feeling of performing civic duty.

Eye On Business / Merchants Mile and One Half BURMA is currently working with Jerry Henderson, Chief Matt Gregory and the Buckhannon City Police Department on a pilot program for a Business to Business Watch group. BURMA members attended an initial training session presented by Chief Matt Gregory on April 22, 2009. During the training, volunteers were given valuable information such as:

  • how to observe behavior
  • what is suspicious activity
  • behaviors for certain crimes
  • what fits and what doesn't
  • how to report information
  • what events need immediate attention
  • what events are not immediate but require follow-up
  • gather details: who, what, where, when, etc.

In addition, each volunteer should always carry a cell phone so they can report events that need immediate attention. The Police Department can provide a 911 cell phone to any volunteer needing one while on the walk.

Each member was given a walking map of the downtown area and an Incident Report Form to report any incidents that occur on the walk. These forms will be made available to members for their use. Once more volunteers have shown interest, a second training session will be scheduled and open to the public.

BURMA is currently looking for more volunteers. For more information please email us at burma@buretailmerchants.com or contact one of our officers listed on the directory.
